. . . . and his book ‘For Times of Trouble’: he quotes from Psalms 18:2, 30; 61:2, 62:6

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. . . .
As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those who trust in him.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

He only is my rock and my salvation: He is my defence: I shall not be moved.

Among the most reassuring images in the psalms and other scriptures is the portrayal of God as a rock or a fortress. He is rock solid, rock strong, rock sure. He is firm. He can’t be overwhelmed or overcome. But life is such that the rest of us don’t always feel so solid, so strong, or so sure. Circumstances often knock us off balance, and we stagger a bit. We face events that are disorienting to us, that make us uneasy or uncertain or down right fearful.

How wonderful it is in such times to have a rock to lean on, or a high tower to flee to. How wonderful it is when our foot is slipping or our faith is sliding to know that there is something firm and immovable—something solid—that can shore us up and stabilize our uneasiness.

The Book of Mormon prophet Helaman said to his sons Nephi and Lehi, “Remember, that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in a whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.”68

And, of course, what we say of the Son we say of the Father. As beloved Hannah prayed, so we pray, “There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.”69

With the Father and the Son, the Holy Ghost and the gospel as anchors to our lives, we stand more fit and fortified to face life’s challenges. These are our deliverers. These are as unmoved and unmovable as they are unfailing. We trust them, and there in is our salvation.

Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail.”70
