Shortly after the end of the Second World War, a quaint little French village was bombed by mistake. In the old city square, a large statue of Jesus Christ had stood with his hands outspread in an attitude of invitation. On the pedestal was the phrase “Come Unto Me,”
When the figure was being reassembled, all the pieces except for the hands were found in the rubble. When the hands could not be found, someone suggested that new hands be made.
But the people protested, “No—leave Him without hands!!”
So today in the public square, the restored statue of Christ stands without hands. Now, the words on its base read, “Christ Has NO Hands— No Hands But Ours.”
