* Mother Teresa once said of herself: “By blood and origin I am all Albanian. My citizenship is Indian. I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the whole world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the heart of Jesus.”[i] She defines her role in embracing the world by saying, “Our work is to encourage Christians and non-Christians to do works of love. And every work of love, done with a full heart, always brings people closer to God.” [ii] Her mandate of mercy is to spread love in the world by relieving the suffering of others—through a Catholic sisterhood and brotherhood who serve a largely non-Christian community, and who do not compel those they help (or their helpers) to convert to the Catholic faith.
