How sacred a thing marriage is! Johann’s statement teaches in a few words how Heavenly Father views this institution and how far our ‘enlightened’ society has departed from His ways. We believe marriage can be eternal when built upon correct principles with God as a ‘working partner’. It may have become difficult—there are a multitude of ways (from our mortal approach) that it ‘simply is not working’. With anything in life, when we include the Lord and put His desires for us ahead of our own (self centered interests), it will ALWAYS work because we use His tools…daily prayer (together and on our own), fasting, study of His word…. He can smooth out the rough spots when we (together in marriage) resolve to do it His way. Difficult marriages can be saved when both partners are open to all possibilities, have a humble approach, look for His answers, then together willingly approach and embrace them. Are you open to a simple exercise to illustrate the potential role Christ can play in any marriage? With your spouse take a blank piece of paper. Now draw a triangle. At the bottom two points of the triangle, put your’s and your spouse’s name with Jesus Christ at the top point. Explanation… When we mortals partner with Christ and grow in faith in Him by doing as suggested above, putting Him and spouse first… abandoning selfish thoughts and habits, we individually and together partner with Him. We draw closer to one another and Him through selfless acts that cause us to ascend up the triangle until we become one with Him in purpose and in the direction He would have us take. There will always be ‘work to do’ in a marriage relationship. When one or both mortal partners stop working on their marriage, they’re moving away from Christ to tragedy and abandoning their vows to one-another and to God. kdm
