Keep the Commandments
The following is some instruction and counsel given from our living Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson during the October 2015 general priesthood session. He invited priesthood holders (but applicable to all members) to keep the commandments, and reminded them of ways to live “so that we remain worthy to possess [the] priesthood.”
Seek the Holy Ghost. “Open your hearts, even your very souls, to the sound of that special voice which testifies of truth. … May we ever be in tune, that we might hear this comforting, guiding voice which will keep us safe.”
Avoid sin. “I plead with you to avoid anything that will deprive you of your happiness here in mortality and eternal life in the world to come. … How vital it is that we exercise constant vigilance in order to avoid giving in to [Satan’s] lies and temptations.”
Repent. “If any of you has stumbled in his journey, I assure you that there is a way back. The process is called repentance. Although the path is difficult, your eternal salvation depends on it. … I plead with you to determine right here and now to take the steps necessary to fully repent.”
Strengthen testimonies. “Throughout our lives we will need to nurture strong testimonies by studying the scriptures and by praying and by pondering the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When firmly planted, our testimonies of the gospel, of the Savior, and of our Heavenly Father will influence all that we do.”
“May we keep the commandments!” President Monson concluded. “Wonderful and glorious things are in store for us if we do.” (for more of this address from God’s prophet click… President Monson’s remarks.
It is my opportunity and blessing to follow such pure counsel given by many over those two days (of General Conference) and every six months before and since. Each General Conference weekend (5 two hour sessions a weekend, twice a year) provide needed counsel as if from the mouth of Christ himself. This is solid evidence that God has ongoing interest and purpose (as I let Him) in my life. When watched and implemented I partake of ‘living waters’, refreshment to my soul. He is truly mindful of us and speaks clear counsel to the faithful / vulnerable. The real question becomes ‘Am I open to that counsel?’ They never would want me to feel abandoned by them… Will I pay attention, partake and heed their light so given or choose an alternate course. Yes, the standard works of the Church (Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price) are generous examples of God’s caring concern and I can use them daily. In wonderful addition, God also brings revelation into my life through the ‘living oracles’, Apostles, Prophets, other inspired leaders, even local leaders. Such on going revelation (along with personal prayer) brings lasting peace and purpose to my life. Conference talks from our Prophets, Apostles, leaders are always available (on the full range of media) by going to General Conference. Heeding such counsel strengthens faith and frees me from a multitude of worldly errors (designed by the adversary to lead to his darkness… I prefer the Light, even God; Thanks be to Him!). kdm
