‘Approaching Zion’
Doctor Hugh Nibley was a professor at Brigham Young University. He was a scholar schooled in Egyptology and multiple other ancient (and modern) languages, and read ancient (2000+ year old) text, scrolls as easily as we might read the newspaper. His lectures contained direct readings of ancient text, much of which would parallel and greatly enhance Bible teachings, and insights not clearly taught in the Bible. Those lectures were fascinating. (My cassette tapes were long ago worn out!)
On my bookshelf, unread for at least 10 years, it was only a matter of time before I began including his words/insights in this blog. However, as he says in the first line above, it has ‘highly unpopular — even offensive themes’ for those outside or even within the context of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. Most of the Christian world and Latter-day Saints are simply not ready for it. Why, because it means a paradigm change and we are all resistant to change when we feel ‘all is well in (my corner of) Zion’.
The good news… he wrote, spoke in ways easily and clearly understood. There is not much chance of me erring doctrinally and I invite you to ‘police’ that if necessary. I’ll start with one post a week. kdm
