I’ve just been preparing a lesson ‘Marriage and Family – Ordained of God’ for a Sunday meeting. The teachings are from a Prophet of God (and former US Secretary of Agriculture) Ezra Taft Benson, now 20+ years deceased. They are so relevant for today that I felt each of the 11 pages should be dipped in bright highlighter! and/or read and reread, much like scripture. It truly is a lesson for all families who struggle in our increasingly difficult faith and family challenging world. A couple of excerpts:
“Marriage and family life are ordained of God. In an eternal sense, salvation is a family affair. God holds parents responsible for their stewardship in rearing their family. It is a most sacred responsibility.” and…
“The family is the most effective place to instill lasting values in its members. Where family life is strong and based on principles and practices of the gospel of Jesus Christ, … problems do not as readily appear.
Successful parents have found that it is not easy to rear children in an environment polluted with evil. Therefore, they take deliberate steps to provide the best of wholesome influences. Moral principles are taught. Good books are made available and read. Television watching is controlled. Good and uplifting music is provided. But most importantly, the scriptures are read and discussed as a means to help develop spiritual-mindedness.”
