Such an approach builds character because life has depth and purpose that yields sweet fruits from our labors. I used to think that it would be great to retire… have endless days to do according to my choosing alone. Such an approach became more clear when a close friend said, “Why would you want to retire, to die?” for that is what happens to many when they ‘die within’ by choosing the ‘couch potato approach’ of endless tube watching, gaming, or self-centered pursuits. The happiest people I have met don’t retire from something they love to do. As described by President McKay they never lose that gift to work, and it seems to happen best when they pursue a life in service to others, constantly focusing their energies outward. kdm
