We can remain calm, protected by Him, though hell may rage around us (part of that ‘excruciating’ that many of Christ’s close followers may have to go through before he comes again). He will show us what to do that we and loved ones may be safe when we are disciplined in His ways. Without those disciplines, which become an expression of our appreciation for and faith in Him, we have no promise (see D&C 82:10). (Remember, Christ voluntarily experienced persecution and endless hardship far beyond our understanding, so understands all we go through. He gave the ultimate sacrifice in paying for the sins of all in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the Cross. He bought us with his blood and infinitely intense pain.)
Though it would be great if we could change within us, all that opposes His purposes in an instant that typically is too much for mortal beings to remain true to. Also, there is valuable/stable growth in the process… we learn to lean upon Him causing a greater closeness. As mentioned in the last post, we can start by giving our self back to the Lord through reverencing His Sabbath day. Start from wherever you are now. Thus if you have never observed Sunday for worship, but just another day of outdoor pursuits, shopping, and getting together with friends for fun times, consider a promise to Him that you will give Sunday to Him by attending church every week for next 3 months… and that you will pray at least twice a day, morning and evening (always include in you prayers the commitment to attend church and seek His help to keep that promise). That’s all, until the Lord prompts you to do more…
The Lord may tell you, “it’s time to stop going to movies on Sunday” or “mow your lawn on Saturday instead of Sunday.” The point being he will tailor his suggestions to you personally, typically one at a time. In following Him those suggestions will fit your circumstances so that you grow gradually in becoming closer to Him. This allows you to progress at a stable pace of deepening commitment and increasing self-discipline. For assistance in learning how to pray or any other question, click ‘Missionary assistance‘. (A word of warning; Satan will do anything to disrupt your resolve to follow a path that draws you closer to Christ. You can tell his voice because it brings confusion and uncertainty, as though someone is giving you instructions to abandon Christ and wholesome principles. Also, you will be amazed when circumstances arise or friends drop by, unannounced, to take you away from your resolve, to follow a worldly ‘fun time’ instead.)
Don’t be discouraged if you slip on the simpler things you resolve to change. We often need to repent multiple times before this new direction brings a change in habit. Changes needing greater, more intense discipline where deeper spiritual laws have been broken, can come through fasting and prayer.
