“Men build too many walls and not enough bridges.” ~Sir Isaac Newton
Not, of course, specific to men but we can often claim the lion’s share of this thought! In history itself, it’s mainly men who created the walls inciting conflict.
In the past there were times when someone would incite confrontation, and I would get feisty in return, thinking ‘I’ll show them!’ (Who else watching took note?) It wasn’t necessary–is it ever really necessary? Then I discovered that, when so engaged, the Spirit would tell me to be careful, or an escalation would certainly occur. When listening, I was often given a solution, to build a bridge instead. I now hear their point, consider, and come up with an idea how both sides would be happy. It requires discipline and both giving a little. Human nature often relents when both sides strive to surrender something.
I am reminded on this topic that I still have walls built years ago, in places far away, that I have attempted or need to tear down, and replace with bridges. Some though I am ready, they are not.
When it comes to family relations many, like myself in the past, have tended to build walls from their spouse and children. I recall times when things were not going well either at work or in circumstances I had brought upon myself. I would carry the ‘baggage’ home and a sullen mood would isolate me from those who could have rescued me had allowed it. I could have left the baggage at the door.To prevent walls in family relations it would be well to remember: “The ideal mother is firm beneath her gentleness; The ideal father is gentle beneath his firmness.” ~ Author Unknown
