From Neal A. Maxwell:
Yes, we are “free to choose,” but, Ironically, misusing our agency, such as by celebrating our appetites, actually contracts our range of choices. Addiction of whatever form shrinks our focus (2 Nephi 2:27). Misusing our God-given freedom to choose brings consequences that are not agency friendly. Some, “push the edges of the envelope,” seeking emancipation only to experience contraction.
Consider, for example the case of the Gadarene swine. By the time the herd made their headlong dash to the sea, they would not have been much interested in considering options. Increasingly, therefore, hedonists who herald the liberty to choose do so while scarcely noticing the diminishing horizon. Hence, what a war was fought over in heaven, is, by some, surrendered so easily on earth (Revelation 12:7. ~Neal A.
